Today was Jumaa so most everyone was on camp. I took advantage of the down time to clean my weapons.
Although I haven’t fired a single shot since Fort Riley, both my M-4 rifle and M-9 pistol has accumulated dust. The enveloping dust is finer than talcum powder and coats everything with a minute thickness. It’s a cleaning nightmare because every day the dust just seems to accumulate even more. It gets into everything including our rooms. So it’s imperative we keep our weapons operational, especially our crew serve weapons mounted on the HMMVWs. I’m sure after this year is over, I will become an expert at stripping down the weapons and cleaning them.

Our MWR personnel (led by 2 energetic Staff Sergeants) held a camp basketball tournament and an outside cookout. The DFAC provided the burgers, dogs, and buns, and the Air Force volunteered to cook for the crowd. The 3 on 3 basketball competition was pretty intense and the teams created some rivalry festivities. The Marines took 3rd place and the Army won the tournament by edging the Air Force 21-16. Note: They just recently poured the concrete pad and installed a portable basketball hoop. When it’s not being used for basketball, some hard core soccer players use it for 3 on 3 matches.
