Despite being in a Muslim country and on the other side of the world, some Celtic rituals are still celebrated. Some of our energetic MWR personnel made sure of that. They converted the recreation center into a morbid gathering place equipped with skeletons and wooden tombstones with humorous epitaphs inscribed on them. Carved Jack-o-lanterns with eerie looking faces rounded out the décor. But something happened before the festivities started that couldn’t be anticipated and wasn’t built into the original schedule of events. A 6.0 magnitude earthquake vibrated the ground and surrounding wood buildings. The epicenter was located 160 miles from here in the Hindu Kush mountains and same region as the one we encountered on 23 October 09. No casualties have been reported.
But a little earthquake tremor could not stop the costume party from taking place. This event has been carefully planned for months now. Several months ago, an AF Major contacted a costume vendor in the United States and they graciously sent a box of costumes to be worn by military personnel attending this party. Some people were creative and wore traditional costumes, while others were honoring their heritage and wore cultural costumes. We also had pumpkin bowling and pumpkin toss.
